Mayer Kass was born in Poland in 1909. His family owned a transport business involving carts and trucks. When he immigrated to Israel in 1933, he already had a truck driver’s license. His first job was driving a 1933 Volvo truck for the HaHoresh Transport Cooperative in Ramat Gan. Over the years Mayer went into the used car sales business and from 1963 he also sold new Volvo cars as a Volvo agent. In 1967, Volvo chose Mayer as its exclusive representative in Israel. This is when he established the company bearing his name – the Mayer Cars and Trucks Co. Ltd. Later on his son israel and son-in-law Yaakov Shachar came on board to manage the Company. Following his death in 1976, Israel and Yaakov (Yankele) continued to manage the Company together. Over the years the third generation came on board – namely Avner Kass and Or Shachar, who today serve as Joint Chairmen of the Vehicle Group. The Company has grown and diversified into other areas, all related to the world of cars and trucks. These include: The Hertz business in Israel, Autocenter, Merkavim, which builds bus bodies, Kavim Public Transport and others.
